Citizen groups demand the resignation of Attorney General José Luis Cervantes Martínez

These accusations point to a lack of respect for the separation of powers and a persistent violation of human rights. Groups such as PIDH AC and FMVD AC have directly accused the president of the Judicial Branch of the State of Mexico, Ricardo Sodi Cuellar, of being responsible for imposing José Luis Cervantes Martínez as Attorney General of the Republic in 2022.
According to the complainants, this appointment was a political maneuver that disregarded international standards on judicial independence, such as the recommendations issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
THE LEGACY OF FABRICATED CRIMES
The case of the “Bling Bling” bar in Cuautitlán Izcalli, where six people lost their lives, has become emblematic of the crisis. Authorities detained several people, allegedly innocent, under conditions that family members and advocates describe as arbitrary, also alleging torture to force confessions. These practices, the groups warn, are the hallmark of the Attorney General’s Office and perpetuate a corrupt justice system that fills prisons with fabricated defendants.
PROSECUTOR UNDER FIRE
The appointment of Cervantes Martínez, criticized from the outset, was unanimously approved by the State Congress with 75 votes. Activists point out that this process was marred by irregularities, including the lack of certification in the now-Prosecutor’s background checks. They accuse Sodi Cuéllar and the Congress of consolidating a “crony prosecutor” who responds more to political interests than to the administration of justice. According to these critics, Delfina Gómez’s administration uses public resources and media strategies to mask a reality of insecurity and distrust in institutions.
CALL TO ACTION
Given this scenario, the groups have called for a march on December 5, 2024, in Toluca, where they will demand the resignation of José Luis Cervantes Martínez and a complete overhaul of the state’s security and justice policy. The groups maintain that citizens are called upon to raise their voices against what they consider a flawed system that perpetuates impunity and violates human rights.
