Ecatepec, Mexico, September 12, 2026 – The Ecatepec government has reclaimed **Texalpa Park**, a space that, according to municipal authorities, had been in private hands for several years and has now been rehabilitated for community use.
The park, located in the community of Texalpa, was renovated and painted by municipal workers, and murals and free activities have been added through the “Change the Court” program.
Mayor **Azucena Cisneros Coss** maintained that public spaces belong to the people and stated that reclaiming the park required removing the locks that prevented its use.
Public spaces belong to the people
“These are public spaces; they belong to the people,” the mayor stated, adding that her administration seeks to regain control of areas that were abandoned or managed by private individuals.
The City Council reported that it is currently working on the restoration of **500 public spaces**, primarily parks, where it plans to later develop free sports and community activities.
At Texalpa Park, classes in **boxing, Zumba, and basketball** are offered, among other activities. According to Sergio Joel Ramos Melo, a boxing instructor with “Cambia de Cancha” (Change the Court), around **50 young people** attend the classes, which are also held at La Avioneta and Las Canchas parks in the same community.

Residents of the area also highlighted the transformation of the space. José Luis Luna Morales, a resident of Santa María Tulpetlac, stated that the park had been a problem for the community for years and that its restoration has once again allowed for family and sports use.
The municipal program proposes that the physical restoration of the parks be accompanied by free activities to encourage their use by children, teenagers, and families.
