Man jailed on charges of attempted murder against police officers
Nezahualcóyotl, Mexico, September 13, 2026.— Armed attacks against police officers resurfaced in various parts of the State of Mexico. In Nezahualcóyotl, a man accused of attempted murder against municipal officers was jailed, while just ten days later, agents from the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office were attacked with gunfire during an operation in Amecameca.
The Nezahualcóyotl case dates back to August 30, when police responded to the Impulsora neighborhood after receiving a report of gunfire directed at a house.
According to the investigation, the officers later located the vehicle linked to the report. When police signaled him to stop, the driver attempted to flee, and officers observed that he was carrying a firearm and beginning to load it.
The official version states that the officers ordered him to drop the weapon, and when he refused, they took action to subdue him. The man was wounded in the arm and taken to Dr. Gustavo Baz Prada General Hospital.
After receiving medical attention, Melecio “N”, 39, was discharged and taken to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. There, prosecutors discovered outstanding arrest warrants against him, so he was transferred to the Nezahualcóyotl-Bordo Penitentiary and Social Reintegration Center, where he was placed at the disposal of a judge.
The incident had previously been reported as a chase in which the driver allegedly fired at police officers and ran over one during his escape attempt. However, the charge now officially announced by the municipality is attempted murder of members of the police force. This is not the only recent case.
The most recent incident in Nezahualcóyotl occurred on August 3, when a man identified as Juan “N” was arrested after allegedly shooting at a municipal police patrol. The incident took place during coordinated patrols between state and municipal police.
And on June 27, four men were arrested in the Ampliación Vicente Villada neighborhood after municipal police detected gunshots and launched an operation; a 9mm handgun was seized from them.
The phenomenon is not limited to Nezahualcóyotl.
On August 19, in San Pedro Totoltepec, Toluca, two municipal police officers and two court clerks were attacked during a legal proceeding; one person was arrested and turned over to the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office.
Ten days after the Neza confrontation, on September 9, agents of the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM) Investigative Police were met with gunfire in San Pedro Nexapa, Amecameca, when they attempted to execute an arrest warrant related to a kidnapping investigation.
The confrontation left one person dead, one agent injured, and four detained, according to information from the Attorney General’s Office and news reports.
These cases alone do not indicate a consolidated statewide trend; however, they do reveal a recent series of attacks against security personnel and law enforcement officers.
The Nezahualcóyotl case is now in the hands of the judicial authorities, who will determine Melecio “N’s” legal status and potential criminal liability.
Meanwhile, this series of events raises another question: how vulnerable are State of Mexico police officers when they attempt to arrest armed individuals or execute court orders?
